Summer holidays: A practical guide to planning your vacations in Portugal

The summer vacations are just around the corner, and many French and Portuguese-speaking work for local companies, particularly in call centers in Portugal. However, there are still many who haven't yet mastered the nuts and bolts of the Portuguese labor code, or how to apply for summer leave. This article aims to shed some light on this crucial subject.

How long can you plan your vacations with your employer in Portugal?

March has just begun, and for many people that means it's time to plan their vacations. You have until the end of this month to plan your vacations. Then, before April 15, the company must draw up what we call the "Mapa de Férias".

In the absence of an agreement between the employee and the company, the latter may schedule them between May 1 and October 31, unless the collective agreement or the opinion of the employee representatives allows a different period.

Can the company modify your vacation?

According to the consumer protection organization, the employer can modify the agreed vacation period, or even interrupt it, for imperative reasons linked to the running of the business.

"In cases of interruption, the employer is obliged to allow the worker to take half the vacation period to which he is entitled on a continuous basis. In both cases (interruption and modification), the person can be compensated for material and immaterial damage resulting from this modification or interruption", also specifies DECO PROteste.

In conclusion, it's undeniable that holiday planning in Portugal requires a thorough understanding of the legal details. For French- and Portuguese-speaking workers, knowing the deadlines and rights associated with summer vacations is essential.

The "Mapa de Férias" offers a valuable window for organizing your days off, and it's imperative to respect the established deadlines. In the event of disagreement, understanding the possibilities for modification by the employer is just as crucial.

Let's not forget that, according to DECO PROtesteIn the event of non-consensual interruption or modification of leave, the employee has legal rights which must be respected.

For a fulfilling work experience in Portugal, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with these aspects of the labor code. Stay informed, communicate effectively with your employer, and don't hesitate to seek professional advice if necessary.
