Holy Week in Óbidos is considered to be the high point of the calendar the city's liturgical and cultural center in the district of Leiria. The event fuses devotion, faith and culture in a program that attracts thousands of people every year, according to the local municipality.

Visit programwhich runs from March 23 to 31, includes some of the country's oldest ceremonies. The "Procissão dos Passos", with over 400 years of history, is highlighted by the municipality.

Religious ceremonies begin on Saturday 23rd with the Mudança das Imagens procession. This is followed on Palm Sunday by the Palm Sunday blessing and procession, the Palm Sunday mass at Santa Maria church and the Passos procession.

The festivities continue on Maundy Thursday with Holy Thursday mass and the washing of feet at the Church of São Pedro. Good Friday includes the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord Jesus, the Auto of the Descent from the Cross in Santa Maria Square and the procession of the Burial of the Lord.

On Saturdays, the faithful can take part in the Easter Vigil, and on Sundays in the Mass of the Resurrection, both at the Church of São Pedro.

The cultural program includes three concerts at the Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus da Pedra, all free.

  • The first, on March 25, features the Óbidos Academy of Music performing "Vetera Vox".
  • Followed on March 26 by "Noturnos in Sabbato Sancto", also presented by the Óbidos Academy of Music.
  • Finally, on March 27, the program closes with the "In Memoriam Christi" concert, presented by the Coral Alma Nova and the Sinfonietta D'Óbidos.
