Tourism in Portugal continues to post impressive figures, as shown by the latest data published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) for the month of February 2024. Revenues from the tourist accommodation sector maintained an upward trend, confirming continued growth.
Tourism in Portugal: Impressive figures for February 2024
In February, the tourist accommodation sector recorded a total of 1.8 million customers, an increase of 7.0% on the same period last year. This increase was accompanied by a 6.4% rise in the number of overnight stays, to 4.3 million. These impressive figures resulted in total revenues of 276.4 million euros, a significant increase of 13.0% over the previous year.
It's also worth noting that accommodation revenues reached 202.1 million euros, recording growth of 13.1%. These results reflect not only an increase in tourist numbers, but also an improvement in the sector's profitability.
Average revenue per available room (RevPAR) and average revenue per occupied room (ADR) also recorded positive growth. RevPAR stood at 37.8 euros, up 4.5%, while ADR reached 83.8 euros, up 6.0%. It is worth noting that ADR reached record values in the Lisbon region and in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Lisbon remains one of the country's leading tourist destinations, accounting for 24.3% of total overnight stays in February. The city attracts both residents and non-residents, making a significant contribution to the sector's growth. Other major municipalities, such as Porto, also recorded significant increases in overnight stays.
Over the January-February period, tourism growth in Portugal remained solid, with an increase of 3.3% in the number of overnight stays compared to the same period last year. This growth was mainly driven by the increase in the number of non-resident tourists, which rose by 4.9%.
Taking into account all types of accommodation, including tourist lodgings, campsites, vacation camps and youth hostels, the figures remain impressive. In February, there were 1.8 million customers and 4.6 million overnight stays, representing increases of 6.6% and 5.8% respectively.
It is important to note that these results have been influenced by the moving structure of the calendar, due to the leap year of 2024, which granted an extra day to the month of February. However, even taking this factor into account, the figures continue to demonstrate Portugal's growing appeal as a tourist destination.
Recent data confirms Portugal's leading position as one of Europe's top tourist destinations. With a diverse range of attractions, from picturesque landscapes to rich history and culture, the country continues to attract growing numbers of visitors, making a significant contribution to the national economy and reinforcing its reputation as a top tourist destination.
