Alter Real: An equestrian treasure

The Alter Real, considered particularly pure among Lusitano horses, is a line of saddle horses of Portuguese origin in its own right. Very close to the Lusitano, but also to the pure Spanish breed and the Minorquin, it is ideal for dressage.

An exceptional selection

The history of Alter Real dates back to 1752, when King John V founded a royal stud farm at Alter do Chão to increase the production of horses for both riding and fighting. Selection began in 1747 and 1748 at the royal stables in Lisbon, under the guidance of the Braganza royal family.

An annual event

Every year on April 24, the Alter Real Foundation organizes an auction where Lusitano thoroughbred breeders present their equine jewels. The following day, the "Alentejo Mastiff" competition showcases this loyal breed, guardian of the Alentejo's herds and vast estates.
