European elections 2024

The European elections will take place on June 9, 2024 for voters registered on the French electoral rolls. This election is of vital importance, as it offers French citizens the opportunity to choose the 81 representatives who will represent them in the European Parliament.

In this article, we share with you the steps you need to take in order to vote as a French citizen living in Portugal.

How to take part in the European Elections as a French national living in Portugal

If you are a French citizen residing in Portugal and wish to exercise your right to vote in these elections, it is crucial to follow a few administrative steps to ensure that your voice counts.

1. Check your registration on the French consular electoral roll :

Make sure you are registered on the French consular electoral list by visiting the website service-public.fr. This step is essential to obtain your National Voter Number (NNE), which is indispensable for all subsequent electoral procedures.

2. Update your personal information online :

On the "Inscription consulaire au registre des Français établis à l'étranger" page of the service-public.fr portal, you can update your contact details, including your home address, telephone number and e-mail address. This update will also enable you to receive important information by e-mail.

3. Respect the deadline for registering on the electoral roll:

For the 2024 European elections, the deadline for registration on the French consular electoral roll is May 3, 2024. However, certain specific circumstances allow late registration, such as a move for professional reasons or acquisition of French nationality.

4. Register on the consular electoral roll:

If you meet the conditions for registration on the French consular electoral roll, contact the embassy to find out how to proceed.

5. Choose your voting method :

During elections, you have the option of voting in person or by proxy. If you plan to vote in person, make sure you have the appropriate identification documents, such as a French national identity card or passport.

Polling stations will be open in Lisbon, Porto and Vilamoura, from 8am to 7pm local time.

6. Set up a power of attorney if necessary:

If you are unable to go to your polling station on polling day, you can set up a proxy in favor of someone you trust. You can do this online at maprocuration.gouv.frusing your National Voter Number (NNE). Don't forget to validate your proxy in person, at a consulate or police station.

By following these steps, you can fully exercise your right to vote and actively participate in the democratic process during the European elections, helping to shape the future of the European Union.
