The festival, which aims to contribute to creative reflection on the world, will feature discussions on the many dimensions of writing and travel, exhibitions, concerts and workshops, among other activities, in Óbidos, in the district of Leiria.
Festival Latitudes - Littératures et Voyageurs, 2024 edition
Visit program will kick off on Thursday with a tour of the municipality, also marking the opening of the "Portraits told by Alice Vieira in Óbidos" exhibition, celebrating the author's 45-year literary career, on view at the Abílio de Mattos e Silva Museum until May 19.
On the same day, an exhibition of photographs by Ana Abraão, entitled "Other worlds and Kalasha", will open at Galerie Nova Ogiva.
Among the books presented at Óbidos is "Viagem a Portugal Revisited", in which José Luis Peixoto and five foreign authors revisit the places described by José Saramago in his book "Viagem a Portugal".
Authors such as Fernando Ribeiro (lead singer of Moonspell), Sandra Monteiro (director of the Portuguese edition of Le Monde Diplomatique), Romanian poet Dinu Flamand and Thai translator Lanlalit Samanuhat, among others, take part in literary and travel discussions.
The program also includes six workshops on a variety of themes, such as rocket building, travel cartooning, travel notebook binding and creative writing.
A "literary wood" and imaginary journeys in the van of disarray are also on the program, along with screenings of animated shorts and a literary dinner inspired by the life and work of local poet Armando da Silva Carvalho.
Program highlights include a session on "500 years of Camões... Why?", curated by Camões 500, and concerts with Beatriz Ferro and Melanie Russo, as well as the Termómetro 2024 Festival, featuring emerging bands.
The Latitudes Festival is organized by the municipality Óbidos since 2017.
