From March 1, 2024, a new era begins for the French resident in Portugal with the launch of an innovative experiment: remote passport renewal. The initiative is designed to facilitate administrative procedures by enabling French citizens to renew their passports without having to go to the consulate - a first for the country.
Remote passport renewal: simplify your procedures from France to Portugal
On October 27, 2023, a Conseil d'Etat decree was promulgated, establishing this experiment as part of an ambitious initiative to modernize French consular services abroad. Under the aegis of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, this initiative is part of the priority project to improve services for French expatriates.
Conditions of eligibility
To benefit from this advance, you must be registered with the Portuguese embassy's Register of French nationals living outside France, with your registration up to date. In addition, you must have a digital identityThe document you need to renew must be valid for at least five years, and must have been issued after you came of age. Your document to be renewed must not have expired more than 5 years ago, and must have been issued after you came of age.
Required documents
Before starting the online procedure, please make sure you have the following documents:
- Your consular registration number (NUMIC)
- Your current travel document
- A recent passport-size photo
- Proof of address less than one month old
- Documents required for changes to your travel document (parent's name, married name)
Steps to follow
- Fill in the form on the service-public.fr website using your La Poste digital identity.
- Buy a dedicated electronic tax stamp on impots.gouv.fr
- Finalize the procedure on service-public.fr.
- After validation by the consulate, send your documents by secure mail, including a prepaid envelope for the return of the official document.
- Make an appointment for a videoconferencingavailable on your dashboard on the Service Public website.
- Follow the progress of your application online and receive your new passport by secure mail.
